Over 80% of Americans who responded to a recent online survey by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) stated the cosmetic condition they were most concerned about was excess weight. Of the 6300 surveyed about aesthetic services, only 6% had already undergone a cosmetic treatment, whereas nearly one third stated they were contemplating a cosmetic procedure. In addition, most considered the specialty in which the physician was board certified as the most important factor in choosing a provider, more so than cost or physician referral.
When asked which condition they were “most bothered” about, their responses were as follows:
- Excess weight
- Lines and wrinkles around the eyes
- Skin texture and/or discoloration
- Sagging facial skin
- Excess fat under the chin
- Lines, wrinkles and/or folds in the midface around the cheeks and mouth
Plastic surgery options to address these problems include liposuction, laser resurfacing, fillers and fat injections. Often procedures may be combined and multiple areas treated concurrently. For example, harvesting fat while performing body contouring with liposuction on the abdomen yields stem cell rich fat that may be used to fill in wrinkles in the face or build up cheekbones for a more youthful appearance.
