As patients seek to address distinct aspects of their facial appearance they would like to improve, a larger number have sought out chin augmentation. According to statistics provided by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), chin augmentation with implants has seen un unprecedented rise in demand.
From 2010 to 2011, the number of chin augmentation surgeries performed by plastic surgeons increased 71% to reach 20,680 total operations last year. This growth rate surpassed that of breast implants, liposuction, and Botox® combined. Appropriate candidates for chin augmentation surgery include men and women in a wide age range, from late adolescence on.
Some experts explain the high number of chin augmentation surgeries to an increased usage of video-chat technology on cell phones, computers and other devices. The different perspective resulting from looking down into the device while i-chatting may result in a less prominent appearance of the chin and exaggerate the appearance of fat around the neck. Often chin implant surgery is combined with other procedures to improve a patient’s appearance, such as neck liposuction or neck lift, nasal reshaping (rhinoplasty), and facial rejuvenation with fillers and laser skin resurfacing.
According to ASPS, other cosmetic procedures that saw an increase in popularity in 2011 include:
• Lip augmentation: 49% increase
• Laser skin resurfacing: 9% increase
• Soft tissue fillers: 7% increase
• Facelift: 5% increase
