A report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reveals that the total number of minimally invasive cosmetic procedures increased by 6% last year. These procedures include Botox and Dysport injections, soft tissue filler injections, and chemical peels. This rise in plastic surgery procedures may be partially credited to the sluggish economy, which also accounts for increased spending on “feel good” products such as beauty items and cosmetics. Procedures aimed at producing rejuvenation of the face, including both surgical and  minimally invasive treatments, saw the highest growth last year.

The “lipstick effect” attributes spending on smaller indulgences instead of expensive items during times of economic downturn. In some cases, patients may be willing to accept lesser results and return for multiple treatments rather than undergo more definitive procedures with longer recovery and downtime, despite the significant improvements in results obtained. Consumers in the luxury market, however, continue to invest significantly in their appearances, with noticeable increases in spending on spa and beauty products. Improving one’s outward beauty also contributes to psychological well-being, because looking better often helps us feel better.
