According to a study of aesthetic plastic surgery procedures conducted by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, over 14 million surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures were performed worldwide in 2011. This includes all types of treatments to beautify and rejuvenate, from Botox and fillers to lasers and peels to invasive surgery such as breast augmentation, liposuction and eyelid lifts. Data show that most of these services were done in the United States, where breast enhancement – including breast augmentation with saline and silicone implants – alone accounted for almost a third of the over 1 million total cosmetic surgeries. When population is taken into account, South Korea proved to be the leader in the number of procedures per capita, with almost 14 procedures/1000 people, most of which involved non-surgical treatments of the skin and hair. Globally, the most popular invasive surgical procedure was liposuction, which involves body contouring with fat removal from areas that are recalcitrant to diet and exercise, such as the belly, thighs (“saddle bags”) and hips in women, and in the belly, flanks (“love handles”) and chest in men. This was closely followed by breast augmentation, blepharoplasty, abdominoplasty and rhinoplasty which made up the top 5 aesthetic surgical procedures.
