Plastic surgery procedures on the nose (rhinoplasty) and chin (genioplasty) are often performed concurrently in order to improve a patient’s appearance. The resultant enhanced patient profile has led to the term “profileplasty” to refer to the combination of these two aesthetic surgeries. The most recent study in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery tracks long-term outcomes of patients who underwent chin and nasal surgery for aesthetic reasons. (1) It demonstrates that results were maintained after 3 years in rhinoplasty and chin augmentation patients. The aesthetic improvement in a patient’s appearance is not limited to the profile view, since there is clearly a 3-dimensional aspect to the surgery. Patients who are considering nasal reshaping may benefit from concurrent chin augmentation surgery so as to improve their overall appearance. The nasal-cervical relationship – between the nose and the chin and neck – is an important consideration when evaluating a patient’s desired aesthetic outcome. In cases of microgenia, where the chin is small, narrow, or underprojected, chin augmentation can restore a more harmonious balance with the face. This would contribute to an improved overall appearance and better result from the nasal reshaping surgery.
Rhinoplasty candidates include patients who seek changes in the size or shape of their nose for a variety of reasons. Most rhinoplasty wish to reduce or remove a nasal hump; shorten, narrow or straighten a wide or crooked nose; make a bulbous, hanging or droopy tip more narrow, pointed or upturned; or make wide nostrils smaller. In patients with breathing issues, a septoplasty for deviated septum may be performed at the same time as aesthetic nasal surgery. Incisions may be camouflaged inside the nose so there are no external scars. Other cosmetic surgeries, such as liposuction of the neck or an eyelid lift may also benefit some patients.
