Removing Moles, Cysts, and Lipomas

Many individuals are bothered by moles, cysts, lipomas, and other skin and soft tissue problems. Dr. Hutchinson often removes these lesions using only local anesthesia during a convenient in office procedure. She will precisely surgically excise the affected area and close the wound so that the resultant scar is as discreet as possible once healed.

Mole Removal

Moles are typically benign skin lesions that may be raised or pigmented and can appear anywhere on the body. Whether your mole is a concern for cancer or is simply unwanted for aesthetic reasons, Dr. Hutchinson can remove it for you in an in-office procedure. Moles are sent to pathology for microscopic analysis and to provide an exact diagnosis.

Cyst Removal

Cysts are mostly benign lumps that can develop nearly anywhere on the skin. They are small “sacs” that can be filled with fluid or keratin. To remove a cyst, Dr. Hutchinson will create an incision and excise the cyst completely. Patients can return home after surgical excision of the cyst and are usually seen in the office for suture removal within a week.

Lipoma Removal

A lipoma is a benign tumor composed of fatty tissue. Dr. Hutchinson will create an incision in the skin so that she can access the lipoma and surgically excise it completely. Most lipomas are superficial, but some are located deeper within the muscle layers. After administering local anesthesia, Dr. Hutchinson will remove the lipoma and then close the incision. The lipoma specimen will be sent for pathology lab analysis and final diagnosis. You can expect to have some bruising, swelling, and mild discomfort in the treated area, but you’ll be able to go home immediately after the procedure. For larger lesions, surgery may be performed in the operating room and require sedation anesthesia for patient comfort.
